7th October: LYL campaigns with pro-free bus travel candidate

London Young Labour was on the campaign trail on Sunday 7th October to support Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, Labour's PPC for Ealing Central and Acton. Bassam was also the guest speaker at the London Young Labour AGM the previous day - telling LYL members about the Labour campaign to win marginal Ealing Central and Acton. If elected, Bassam will become the first MP of Arab heritage and one of Parliament's youngest MPs.

Bassam is the transport spokesperson for Ealing Labour Group and has been defending the Freedom Pass from attacks by Tories, including Ealing councillor Phil Taylor. The leaflet LYL was delivering for Bassam can be downloaded here.

Bassam will be standing against Tory London Assembly member Angie Bray at the next general election. One of Angie Bray's claims to fame is that she moved the Tory budget that if passed would have taken away free bus travel from 385,000 London children. So there is just one good reason for LYL members to get involved in Bassam's campaign!

6th October: New Executive Committee Elected at Packed AGM

A record crowd of more than 150 Young Labour members attended the LYL AGM, which took place at Westminster Central Hall.

Members heard from Bassam Mahfouz, the Young Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Ealing Central and Acton, who spoke of the huge challenges facing his constituency and London and how Labour must connect with the hopes and aspirations of people within the capital.

After Bassam's rousing speech, LYL members elected the 2007-2008 executive committee in a heated election, with many positions closely contested. The new committee can be seen in full here.
