28th May: LYL Affordable Housing Campaign Day Exposes Right-Wing Tory Agenda

The LYL affordable housing campaign day on Saturday 12th May exposed the abysmal Tory record in Hammersmith & Fulham of prioritising fat cat luxury flats over affordable homes for families. LYL distributed more than 10,000 pieces of direct mail to residents on the White City Estate, where many people live in overcrowded conditions.

LYL were joined by local MP Andy Slaughter and Hammersmith & Fulham Labour Group Leader Cllr Steve Cowan, who spoke at lunch about how the Tories were damaging the local area. Infamously, shortly after coming to power, the Tories cut hundreds of units of affordable housing from the planned development at Prestolite Electric in Larden road. Fortunately, Ken Livingstone stepped in to block the plans but the amount of affordable housing built across the Borough has fallen dramatically since when Labour ran the council.

The Tories have also made £34 million of cuts to homeless services, care services, street cleaning and other services. In fact, on the same night that the Tories voted through these cuts they also awarded themselves an 18% pay rise. Let’s not forget that Hammersmith & Fulham is also one of David Cameron’s favourite Tory councils, which tells us something about his political agenda.

The LYL campaigning put the frighteners on the Tories who turned up with their own leaflet. Their leaflet promoted the Tory house-selling scheme, which is unaffordable for most people, encouraging tenants to ring a number to buy a home. As it turned out, the Tories didn’t keep leafleting all day and cleared off after an hour or so.

Commenting on the Tory leaflet Labour Wormholt & White City councillor Colin Aherne commented 'The Tories are showing their true colours. I'm sure 75% of people would like to buy a house, probably even more would like to win the lottery, but the Tories’ new homes are only available to people on £50k plus. This is a cruel hoax. The reality is that the Tories plan to slash the number of affordable homes to rent or buy by half compared with Labour's record.'

Once again, the Tories have managed to demonstrate that they don't understand the needs of ordinary people, and are wholly unreformed.
